Goodreads Challenge Update – April 2020

Hello everyone,

As we are now a third of the way into the year, it is time to check in on my Goodreads challenge!

I set myself a target of 52 books for the year, which was an increase of two from 2019. This felt realistic, as it normally takes me about five days to finish a book, perhaps slightly longer for the ones that go over 400 pages.

One book a week also felt like less pressure, as my reading seemed to slow down a little towards the end of 2019 because of a higher number of work commitments.

But so far in 2020, I think I have done very well! Of course, the current lockdown situation has allowed me more time to read, although I am not reading a huge amount more than what I did before.

As I type, I have read 21 books in 2020, which according to Goodreads is four ahead of schedule. They have an average of 345 pages, and if I keep going at the same speed I should be able to beat my target and perhaps get to 60 books or more.

So far there have been two five-star reads, although there are lots more that I have rated highly, so I would say that I am really happy with most of the books I have chosen to read this year. The only sadness is that a couple of highly anticipated reads have fallen below expectations.

Here are the books I have read so far in 2020:

The best thing about my reading is just how varied it has become. I made very good progress in 2019 with reading a wider range of genres, but now I am switching genre for pretty much every book I read. It has made me enjoy reading even more, and prevented me from falling into a slump. One of my other targets for 2020 was to read more diverse books, and so far that is going reasonably well.

I am hoping that by the time I post my next Goodreads challenge update at the end of August, I will be edging quite close to my target. My TBR for the coming months is not planned out yet, but I am excited to discover some great reads!

Are you taking part in the 2020ย Goodreads Challenge? How are getting on? Let me know in the comments!

Happy reading ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Congrats, Stephen! Happy for your progress and also that youโ€™re reading across genres! I find that frequently moving between genres and โ€œlightโ€ and โ€œheavyโ€ reads also helps prevent me for falling into a slump. Also, Iโ€™m intriguedโ€”what did you 5 star and what were your biggest disappointments so far?

    1. Thank you, Gilana!! I agree, reading too many ‘heavy’ books in succession can be slump inducing.
My 5-star reads were With The Fire On High and Where The Crawdads Sing (a phenomenal read!). Special mentions too for The Corset and The Lion Tamer Who Lost.
My most disappointing reads were One Year Later and Dead Ringer – I had high expectations for those, but overall a very good reading year do far! ๐Ÿ˜Š

  2. Well done! My Goodreads challenge is 50 books and I’m only in book 9. I recently started reading two books at the same time and it made me finish faster, so I will do that the rest of the year and hopefully I’ll be right on track!

  3. You’re making great progress, Stephen! It’s also great that you’re switching genres between books. It’s something I’ve been trying to do this year and I find it definitely helps me stay engaged in each book.
