Poem – Looking Back

Hello everyone,

I have another bookish poem to share today. It is now getting super difficult to think of new ones!

This is about writing book reviews and the entire thought process that goes into it. I am more relaxed about book reviews now than I used to be, but there is still the challenge of having to arrange my thoughts and ensure that firstly my review makes sense, and also that I use the right words to describe the book and my feelings on it.

So here is the poem. I don’t think it is my best one, but I hope you like it!

The book closes and I take a breath
Thoughts come in unrelenting waves
All there, all alive in my head
They now just need to be arranged.

I think back to all the things I liked;
Refer to a set of scribbled notes,
Assess each character and sub-plot
Perhaps even a highlighted quote

Now the quest for the perfect words
The ones that capture the story in your eyes
Honest and directly from the heart
But often very tricky to write

After much reflection the review takes shape
I award a sprinkling of stars
Looking back on a memorable read
Or one that lacked the essential charm

Did you like this poem? Let me know what you think in the comments!

  1. Yes, I love it. Though it’s obviously about book reviews and making them, I kinda give another meaning to it. When I read the first line, I thought about an old person whose life is coming to an end and when I kept reading, it felt like the poet is reviewing everything that s/he encountered in life.

Lol, my mind, sometimes, makes things complex. But anyway, it really is well-written poem Stephen. 🙂

      1. 🙂 🙂 And ugh same here. I missed our chats. I only came back and regularly posting on my blog last month and I know I will never have the time to catch up on posts I missed. But I’m glad I’m starting to interact again. 🙂
